Mosaic Frames FAQs

What is a mosaic frame/mosaic substrate?

A mosaic frame or mosaic substrate is the base surface that you build your mosaic on. It’s the foundation that holds all the materials — glass, tile, beads, china, or other treasures — in place once they’re glued and grouted.

Our mosaic frames are beautifully cut, ready-to-use wood bases designed specifically for mosaic art. They come in different shapes and sizes — from classic frames to decorative designs — and provide a sturdy, smooth surface for your creative vision to come to life.

Do these mosaic frames come with tiles or kits?

No. The frames are sold separately, so you can choose your own tiles, glass, or china pieces. If you’d like a full set, explore our Mosaic Kits, which include both the frame and all materials you need.

Can I use these mosaic frames outdoors?

Yes! Frames made with exterior-grade MDF are fully waterproof and designed for outdoor use, whether you’re creating a garden mosaic or an outdoor mosaic frame.

Do I need to seal or finish the mosaic frame?

The birchwood mosaic frame is intended for indoors. It is not necessary to seal the frame but it doesn't hurt. The wood can be sealed with Minwax Sealant or a mixture of Weldbond and water (1-4 parts).

Can I paint the wood before I start my mosaic?

I personally prefer the simplicity of the natural wood look when making my own work using the frames, so the materials inside stand out, however you are more than welcome to paint the frame if you would like.

Can I sell the mosaics I make with these frames?

Yes! Sharra's Frames are intended to support working mosaic artists in creating original mosaics of their own to sell.

Are these mosaic frames suitable for beginners?

Definitely. Think of each frame as a “coloring page for mosaics,” simple outlines ready to be filled with color, making them perfect for workshops and first-time mosaic artists.

Does the mosaic frame hang on the wall?

Yes, hanging hardware is included for each frame purchased. Exterior frames come with two different hardware systems, a hanger for wall display and two u-clips for a garden stake mounting (1/2" rebar).

Is the Exterior-Grade MDF really waterproof and safe for outside?

Yes! This is an exceptional MDF that my manufacture used in special custom signage in outdoor, tropical areas with torrential rains. This specific MDF has zero absorption and qualifies as an excellent exterior frame option.

Can I purchase Sharra's Frames to use in mosaic classes I teach?

Yes! You can use Sharra's Frames as substrates for your own mosaic classes and teaching.
